My process begins with searching for unique deadwood. I then accelerate the aging process by weathering or controlled burning. Using power tools, I carve channels for grafting a young tree into the remaining trunk. The appearance of surviving centuries of harsh climate is achieved through years of applying horticulture methods and ancient bonsai techniques of wiring, pruning, tying, and defoliation. These hybrid forms then become the subject of paintings documenting new life growing out of and merging with the remnant wood.
