| Contemporary artist Christopher Fitzgerald uses unexpected visual devices to explore the epistemological tension between religious fundamentalism and humanitarian ideals. Primarily a painter, Fitzgerald also works in drawing, sculpture, photography and video. Blood, or the allusion of it, remains a significant component in his work, valuing it equally for symbolic associations and transformative power. Regarding nature of his work, the artist has stated: "I am not interested in creating shock-art, but I do believe in giving ugliness beautiful form, thereby making it less traumatic. As an aesthetic contemplative alternative, beautiful art should educate us about the realities of the world while helping us to endure and overcome our suffering. Blood as a building material becomes the embodiment of history, sacrifice, and hope at the core of human experience."
